Thinking About Starting a Group? You Can Do This.

Starting a small group might sound like a big step—but it’s really just an invitation to create space for people to connect, grow, and walk through life together. If you care about people and are open to helping others feel seen and welcomed, you already have what it takes.

We’ll walk with you every step of the way.

What Does Starting a Group Look Like?

1. Say Yes to the Nudge
Maybe you’ve been in a group and loved it—or maybe you’ve looked around and thought, I wish there was a group for [fill in the blank]. That spark? It’s worth following. Starting a group begins with simply being open to it.

2. Connect with Heather
You won’t be on your own! We’ll meet with you, hear your vision (or help you discover one), and talk through the basics—like how often to meet, what to focus on, and who to invite. We can also recommend materials or help you shape your own unique group.

3. Invite a Few People
You don’t need to know 10 people before you begin. Many great groups start with just a few friends, or people you’ve seen around church. We’ll give you tips on inviting and even help spread the word.

4. Create a Welcoming Space
Whether you meet in a living room, coffee shop, here at NEC, or online—what matters most is making people feel safe and seen. You don’t need to be a Bible expert or have a spotless house. Just be real and present.

5. We’ve Got Your Back
Once you get started, we’re here to support you with resources, check-ins, and encouragement. You’ll never have to lead alone.

What Makes a Great Group Leader?

You don’t have to be perfect.
You just have to be:

Willing to listen
Curious about others’ stories
Open to learning and growing
Encouraging (even when it’s messy)
Trusting that God will show up in the middle of it all
