July 6 Sermon: Finding Faith: Our Battle Against an ‘Evil Empire’

In our spiritual lives, we battle against an 'Evil Empire' of defense mechanisms and coping strategies that arise when our basic human needs aren't met. These mechanisms—people-pleasing, anger, control, perfectionism—become pervasive forces controlling our lives. Unlike the Star Wars rebellion built on hope, our spiritual rebellion is built on grace—unmerited favor from God that declares we are loved, valued, and accepted regardless of performance. Though we intellectually understand grace, we struggle to live as if it's real, often reverting to proving our worth. The path forward isn't rigid practice but playfully embracing grace through daily reminders and extending it to others.

“Grace says, you are loved, you belong, you matter, you’re valued, you’re important. And until we digest that fully, until that intellect makes its way into our heart, the empire will still be at work and still have its sway with us.
